Members of the Peabody Community Quilt Project are hosting a quilt show and craft sale from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Nov. 8 in the multi-purpose room of Peabody-Burns Elementary School.

The group meets most Saturday mornings during the year to trace, cut, press, and sew quilts and smaller homemade fabric items. Everything is sold to help pay for playground equipment at Peabody city park.

Last year the group sold several dozen quilts, quilt tops, wall hangings, runners, and other items at a benefit auction that raised $8,000.

The upcoming quilt show will feature quilts from all eras, including items not shown at other shows, and quilts from families in the community. Admission will be $5.00.

“We have hosted quilt shows before, but the craft sale is something new,” said organizer Susie Schmidt. “It will be a great opportunity for people to do some early Christmas shopping.”

Items for sale will include tablecloths, table runners, Christmas ornaments and cardholders, potato bags, wall hangings, throw pillows, and more.

There will be a drawing for a Singer sewing machine and a vintage Sunbonnet Sue quilt.

From 1:30 to 2:30 p.m., Schmidt will explain “Quilts of the Underground Railroad.”

“There are about 15 of us in the quilt project. As a group, we all enjoy quilting and sewing,” Schmidt said. “Not everyone attends every Saturday session. Some do most of their work at home and join us occasionally.

“We are in this for the long haul,” she added. “It took a while to get enough quilts and smaller items made to raise $8,000 last year. However, that amount will not go very far when it comes to buying playground equipment.

“Hopefully, everyone will come to look and shop. The money will go for a good cause.”
