Raid film to air on HBO
Something new was added to the opening sequence of Sharon Liese’s documentary “Seized” when it was screened two weeks ago at a film festival in Washington, D.C., and this past weekend at the Free State Film Festival in Lawrence.
The feature-length documentary about the now disavowed raid Aug. 11, 2023, on the Record newsroom and two Marion homes now contains a new opening title, labeling in an HBO documentary.
In answer to a question at the film’s crowded Kansas premiere Sunday in Lawrence, Liese explained that Home Box Office has purchased distribution rights and plans to air the movie on its cable, satellite, and streaming networks, probably in November or December.
The film, which features Marion residents, has been termed “riveting,” “sharply observant,” and “surprisingly funny.”
Critics have praised its balance between covering serious implications for press freedom and navigating complex, “bitchy” small-town politics.
Liese is credited with allowing for the inclusion of local perspectives and gossip without losing sight of broader national significance.
While tackling a serious subject — including the death of newspaper co-owner Joan Meyer — the film frequently is described as “witty” and at times “whimsical,” featuring an “entertaining cast of characters” from the town.
The Record had no financial stake in and had no editorial control over it.
