Rollover accident claims the life of nutrition services director

Leaving two children and a husband behind, Peabody resident Alycia M. Decker, 30, died Friday as the result of injuries she sustained in an accident that occurred because of “unknown reasons.”

Decker started as nutrition services director for Opaa Food Management at Peabody schools at the beginning of the school year.

Law enforcement eventually confirmed her death, and school officials made the announcement to the student body, Superintendent Ron Traxson said.

At 6:15 a.m., sheriff’s deputies, Peabody police, Peabody fire, Marion County ambulance and EMS were dispatched to the injury accident in the 1300 block of 60th Rd. west of Peabody.

A press release from sheriff Rob Craft said Decker, the sole occupant of a white 2006 Pontiac Grand AM that was the only vehicle involved in the crash, was wearing her seatbelt.

“The vehicle had been eastbound on 60th when, for unknown reasons, it left the roadway to the south, struck a utility pole, overturned, and came to a rest in the pasture south of the roadway,” Craft said

Traxson said the atmosphere at school was hectic.

“It’s one of those things you don’t expect or ever want to happen,” he said. “She had two kids in school here.”

Traxson said school staff filled in to help with meals while rumors of the Decker’s wreck circulated in the school.

“It was already out there thanks to social media, and its tough, a hard situation to wrap your head around when you don’t know all the details,” Traxson said. “We tried to shield her kids as much as we could until their father came and got them. It was heartbreaking when he told them.”

Traxson said school officials would encourage students to be conscientious of Decker’s family and friends during this tragic loss.
