Routine stops result in drug busts

Staff writer

Four routine traffic stops by Marion and Hillsboro police over the Halloween weekend resulted in the jailing of five suspects on more serious charges.

Among the items seized in the traffic stops were 2.91 ounces of methamphetamine, enough for as many as 235 doses of the stimulant, and 10.6 grams of marijuana, enough for 33 “joints.”

Marion assistant chief Dustin Woodford made the meth arrest after stopping a vehicle for having a defective taillight at 11:34 p.m. Friday on US-56 near Cedar St. in Marion.

He also seized a clear bulbous pipe, a syringe, and cutoff straws.

Driver Michael Haden, 63, Clay Center, was arrested on suspicion of distribution of methamphetamine, possession of drug manufacturing paraphernalia, having no drug tax stamp, and driving without liability insurance.

He was booked into Marion County Jail, where he was being held Tuesday in lieu of posting a $20,000 bond.

Hillsboro officer John Huebert made the three other arrests.

Huebert stopped a vehicle at 4:33 a.m. Saturday at US-56 and Ash St. in Hillsboro for failing to use a turn signal.

During the stop, he reported discovering 10.6 grams of marijuana, rolling papers, and a lighter.

Huebert arrested driver Jimmere F. Mills, 33, Hemmingway, South Carolina, on suspicion of possessing marijuana and drug paraphernalia, driving while his license was suspended, and failing to register a trailer.

Mills was booked into Marion County Jail and released 10½ hours later after posting a $3,000 bond.

Later that day, Huebert arrested a driver and a passenger on suspicion of marijuana and paraphernalia charges after stopping their car for speeding at 11:33 p.m. Saturday in the 100 block of S. Ash St.

Driver Cindy M. Kahns, 43, Hillsboro, also was accused of driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol and of transporting an open container of alcohol.

She and passenger Michelle L. Hammer, 48, Hillsboro, were booked into Marion County Jail. Both were released 10 hours later after posting $2,000 bonds.

A garbled offense report indicated seizure of an unspecified amount of marijuana and a pipe.

Huebert’s other traffic stop that led to a larger arrest occurred when he pulled over a vehicle for an equipment violation at 8:06 p.m. Friday in the 500 block of N. Ash St.

He arrested driver Kadian E. Sorter, 20, Hillsboro, on suspicion of violating the state’s offender registration act, driving an unregistered vehicle, illegally transferring a vehicle title, and failing to have vehicle liability insurance.

Sorter was booked into Marion County Jail, where he was being held Tuesday in lieu of posting a $5,000 bond.
