Ruby Broce

Ruby Broce, 100, formerly of Peabody, died March 22.

Born Nov. 7, 1910, in Alfalfa County, Okla., to Alvin and Orbay (Chaney) Hughes, she was married Feb. 17, 1934, to Kay W. Smart. After the death of her husband, she moved to Anthony to be near family and later married Herman Broce.

She was a teacher. Her first teaching position was in 1929 in a one-room schoolhouse south of Waldron. Upon her retirement, she entered mission work teaching in Park Gardens Church of Christ Mission School in Puerto Rico.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands; a son, David; sisters Maxine Haltom, Marjorie Huddleston, Norma Reid, Bernice Kaufman, Doris Garner, and Kathleen Brintnall; and brothers Warren, Larson, Darrel, Renos, and Dwight.

Survivors include many nieces and nephews.

Services were Saturday at the Church of Christ in Anthony with Gary Fox officiating. A graveside service was Monday at the Liberty Cemetery, two miles south of Belle, Mo.

A memorial fund has been established with the Anthony Church of Christ and may be sent in care of Prairie Rose Funeral Homes Inc., 602 E Main St, Anthony KS 67003, which is also in charge of arrangements.
