Hillsboro coach John Ruder coached his last games on Friday in Hesston during girls regional tennis.

“I am extremely pleased with the girls’ season,” Ruder said. “The team worked very hard in every practice and improved constantly. They excelled in effort, attitude, and sportsmanship.”

Ruder said he couldn’t think of a better team to end his career with.

“In my 40 years of coaching, my goal has been to use tennis as a platform to help my players grow, not only as tennis players but also in every area of life,” Ruder said. “I stress how tennis can teach them how to succeed in the classroom, in their careers, and in their relationships. Hopefully, I have succeeded.”

Annalise Jorgensen came into regionals with a 9-10 singles record. She was voted by the coaches as the 10th seed out of the 22-player draw. Jorgensen played a strong tiebreaker but ended up losing 7-10.

“She is a senior and I can’t wait to see what God has in store for her life. I know she will put up the same effort into everything she does and I know she will always be a winner,” Ruder said.

Senior Violet Klein and junior Cassidy Bernhardt entered regionals with a doubles record of 10-12.

“I was so proud of the way they competed and how they never gave up until the final point had been played,” Ruder said.

Sophomores doubles team of Claire Morey and Haylee Hardey entered regionals with a record of 6-14.

“Claire and Haylee played some of their best tennis against a very tough team,” Ruder said. “They ended up losing 0-6, 0-6, but it was not for lack of effort. They played many great points and came close in some games. I will remember them always.”
