Runners among best at league races

Marion County teams ran in their league championships last week. Hillsboro girls set the standard with their finish in the Central Kansas League, placing three runners in the top 10.

Emersyn Funk led the way, taking third with a 21:17 finish. She was followed by Ainsley Duell’s sixth-place time of 22:02, and Moriah Jost in ninth at 22:32. Trudy Hein completed the Trojans’ day at 24:39.

The boys team was fourth overall, led by Levi Allen’s third-place finish of 17:22. Tristan Reed was next with a time of 18:13, followed by Caleb Diener at 19:50, Carson Linnens at 20:05, and Noah Bartel at 23:55.

Gavin Wasmuth was the Warriors’ top finisher, placing 12th in 18:47.2. Christopher Beery was next for Marion in 20:20, rounded out by Cooper Bailey at 22:00.1 and Hayden Mendoza with a time of 22:25.2.

Goessel had great success Thursday at Harvey County West Park, with the boys and girls each winning Wheat State League team titles.

The boys were led by Jacob Schrag with a time of 18:15, followed by Timothy Schrag in 19:06. Dawson Duerksen came in at 20:03 with David Sawyer soon after in 20:55, and Javin Schmidt rounded out scoring for the Bluebirds in 22:57.

Cheyenne Sawyer paced the Bluebird girls with a time of 24:04, followed by Braylyn Hoopes at 25:19 and Alyssa Boden at 26:07.

Marion and Hillsboro next will compete Saturday at Class 2A’s regional race in Newton. Goessel will race Saturday at Class 1A’s regional meet in Hutchinson.
