Runways might become longer

Staff writer

Expansion of the Marion airport is being considered by the city council.

At Monday’s meeting, the council talked about expanding runways to comply with Federal Aviation Administration recommendations.

To extend the runways, the city would have to buy additional land.

Council members went into executive session to discuss acquisition of real estate, then came back into open session and voted to look at options for purchasing property.

The council also adopted a 2018 budget.

The $7,091,260 budget does not increase the mill levy or utility rates but projects a large increase in utility revenues.

Council members approved a lease purchase agreement with Central National Bank to buy a new trash truck to replace an aging truck.

Russell Groves of Marion County Development Corporation told council members to contemplate which two people they want to nominate as board members of the corporation.
