Marion resident Andy Ash answered an urgent call by donating blood Monday at the Eastmoor United Methodist Church.

“I give blood regularly. I donate platelets, too, but have to do that in Wichita, which I do, or Salina,” he said.

The Red Cross escalated its call for blood donors this week after falling short during the Independence Day week.

The drive Monday in Marion had already been scheduled. Drives are conducted every 56 days.

A total of 52 pints were donated Monday. “What a great turnout in Marion,” Red Cross communications manager Jan Hale said.

A similar drive was planned for today in Lincolnville.
