School board deadlocks on coaching decision

Staff writer

Marion-Florence school board members deadlocked 3-3 at their most recent meeting on a resolution involving boys basketball coaching positions, leaving the matter unresolved.

“3-3 just means that the resolution to hire the boys basketball coach positions failed, but it’s a 3-3 lock,” Superintendent Justin Wasmuth said.

The board plans to revisit the issue June 15.

“We’re going to bring this back to the next board meeting, and we will re-vote on it,” Wasmuth said. “We could let it die as is, but I think we need a resolution as far as one way or the other.”

The vote involved boys basketball coaching positions. Wasmuth declined to discuss conversations held in executive session or elaborate on specific personnel matters.

A petition has been circulated regarding the coaching positions, encouraging retention of this past year’s coaches, but Wasmuth said the district was not aware of it.

“We have not heard anything of that,” he said.

Wasmuth acknowledged that the district has received communications from parents and players regarding the situation but declined to elaborate.

Asked about the uncertainty surrounding the program, Wasmuth said board members took personnel decisions seriously.

“Every coaching decision or decision as far as moving forward takes a lot of communication and decision making,” he said.

The district hopes to reach a resolution before the school year begins this fall.

Attempts to reach head coach Kevin Dasenbrock and board president Nick Kraus for comment were unsuccessful.
