School watches gym floor closely

Staff writer

The basketball court at USD 408 Sports and Aquatic Center has had to be refinished twice since the gym was built.

Sport Unlimited, a sports flooring company based out of Stillwater, Okla., installed the flooring and varnished the floor all three times. USD 408 Superintendent Lee Leiker called them back in between the volleyball and basketball season last year and the fall and winter sports seasons this year to refinish the floor.

“It’s not that we’re fighting with them; they’re still guaranteeing their work,” Leiker said. “They’ve addressed those concerns that we’ve had.”

Sports Unlimited told Leiker that the wood from the new floor is still expanding and contracting. The movement in the floor is forcing the finish to come up. However, Sports Unlimited said that there shouldn’t be any further problems.

Leiker said that the floor will be ready for basketball practice Nov. 16, but that the school board is going to keep a close eye on how the floor retains its finish.
