Season ends by a point

Hillsboro, the last boys team in the county alive in state playoffs, fell 44-43 in a tightly-fought substate semifinal game in Ebling against Berean Academy.

The game started Tuesday at 6 p.m., having been moved up an hour due to forecasted weather.

The Trojans advanced to the second round with a lopsided 61-27 victory Thursday night over host Marion.

Lincoln Wichert and Easton Shahan each scored 14 points in the victory.

Seth Driggers scored eight, Owen Dalke seven, and Nash Dickinson and Noah Beavers six each.

“We were able to put together a solid game offensively and defensively,” coach Kyle Kroeker said. “This led to shooting 72% from 2 and 35% from 3. The boys played a very solid game defensively, creating 20 turnovers and scoring 26 points off those turnovers.”

The Warriors were unable to match Hillsboro’s high-tempo offense Thursday night.

Jackson Howard led the team with 13 points and 10 rebounds.

Luke Wessel scored six with three steals. Jordy Raymer scored three, as well as Isaac Wesner. Carson Krause had one point, two assists, and two steals.

“Thursday’s game was a tough one,” coach Kevin Dasenbrock said. “The rim seemed to have had a lid on it for us. But the boys never gave up, and I’m proud of that fact.”

This was Dasenbrock’s first year as head coach.

“This season was a good foundation to where we want to go,” Dasenbrock said. “We had a very young team. Being a new program and culture, we battled adversity.

“We have a bright future ahead of us for Warrior basketball, and I’m excited to get back to work this summer.”

Peabody-Burns

Peabody-Burns ended its postseason with a 69-30 loss Monday to Hartford in a second-round substate game.

Jameson Miles led the team in scoring with 19 points.

Goessel

Goessel was eliminated earlier. While the year didn’t go as they had hoped, head coach Curtis Guhr said he was proud of his players for continuing to compete.

“They grew as players and as young men,” Guhr said. “A highlight from the last week of the season was beating Hartford, who at the time were 12-7. Huge win on senior night and a great way to close out our regular season.”
