Season opener no contest for Cougars

Staff writer

The Centre High School boys’ basketball team defeated non-league St. Xavier, 107-36, Friday at home in the opening game of the season.

It wasn’t much of a contest as 12 Centre varsity players contributed and scored points. Starters were Ty Simons, Grant Srajer, Justin Deines, James Wyatt, and Kyle Methvin.

Wyatt scored 7 points and Deines another 3 before Xavier got the ball across the center line. Centre steals were plentiful as the Cougars jumped to a 36-4 lead after one quarter.

The trend continued until the final quarter. Centre scored the 100th point on a 3-point basket by Dakota Stimpson with seven minutes remaining.

Wyatt was the leading scorer with 20 points, followed by Deines, 18, Cory Brunzell, 15, Simons, 13, and Methvin 12. Simons and Deines each provided eight assists for a combined 32 points.

Simons led at the free-throw line with 3-of-3. Kodey Johnson was 3-of-4, and Brunzell was 2-of 2.

Methvin had five offensive rebounds and Wyatt had five defensive rebounds, to lead at the boards. Brunzell added four offensive rebounds, and Chad Mueller had four defensive rebounds.

Johnson had seven steals, followed by Grant Srajer with five and Deines and Wyatt with four each.
