Shed, camper burn in grass fire

What was first called in as a grass fire Monday turned into a shed and camper burning in the 500 block of 2nd St. in Peabody.

Peabody firefighters were paged by dispatchers at 3:22 p.m. Peabody fire volunteer Clayton Philpott was first on the scene, but Peabody quickly called for assistance.

“After we realized we only had so many men, we called Florence over,” Peabody assistant fire chief Steve Rose said.

Rose said the fire started as a grass fire at the edge of the property, and then spread to a shed, where the camper that was parked next to it caught fire.

“There was enough heat off of the shed that it started the inside of the travel trailer,” Rose said.

Peabody fire was reported as finished with the scene around 5:37 p.m., while Florence reported they were back at their fire station at 5:51 p.m.

The cause of the fire is unknown.
