Sherol Nightengale

Interment for Sherol Loy (Clark) Nightengale, who went to be with her savior, Jesus Christ, on Jan. 18, 2025, will be in Summit Cemetery.

She was born Dec. 20, 1934, the 10th child of George and Ida (Roberts) Clark.

On Christmas Eve, 1955, she married Marvin Nightengale. To this union were born three children, Cathy Lee Foote, Bradley Dale Nightengale, and Linda DeeAnn Hess.

Sherol attended Summit Grade School in rural Florence and graduated in 1952 from Burns High School. She attended Kansas State Teachers College, now Emporia State University, for one year and worked as a telephone operator in Burns.

After marriage, she took on the tough occupation of a farm wife. Working side by side with her spouse, Marvin, they built a home and dairy farm business.

Her greatest achievement was being a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.

Sherol became a great cook, creating such specialties as cinnamon rolls, homemade noodles, and meatloaf. She was a talented seamstress and made everyone in the family quilts.

Crocheting was another of her hobbies. Handmade items every family member possesses were stitched with love until she lost most of her sight to macular degeneration.

Out of necessity, she planted a garden to help feed her family, canning many things to eat year-round. Her pickles were such a treat that her loved ones would clamor to get the last one from the jar.

In her later years, she loved her flower gardens as she could still see the vibrant colors they produced.

Sherol was a member of Summit United Methodist Church (formerly Evangelical United Brethren) until it closed. It was very dear to her, as she and Marvin were married in that small rural church.

Preceding her in death are her son-in-law, Mitchell Foote; her parents; and her nine siblings and their spouses, Maude and Ronald Gaines, Wilbur and Marie Clark, Ivan and Marie Clark, Margaret and Bud Matz, Norma and Leroy Riggs, Joyce and Fred Barker, Gordan and Joan Clark, and infant brothers Oswald and Willard Clark.

She is survived by her husband, Marvin, of the home, and children Cathy Foote of Manhattan, Bradley Nightengale (and wife Diane) of El Dorado, and Linda Hess (and husband Jim) of Kearney, Missouri.

Also surviving are grandchildren Kristen (and husband Brannon) Wilds, Roger (and wife Laurie) Nightengale, Laura Nightengale, Casey Nightengale, Allie Hess, Amelia Hess, and great-grandchildren Sophia Wilds, Brock Wilds, and Claire Nightengale — all of whom will deeply miss their beloved “Ma.”

Her many nieces and nephews and their families also will miss her dearly.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Trinity United Methodist Church, El Dorado.
