Shields is head coach for a day

Lady Cougars lose in overtime, 59-50

Staff writer

Kim Shannon Shields, assistant girls’ basketball coach at Centre High School, was the active coach Friday at Chase County. Coach Alan Stahlecker was not able to be there because of a death in the family.

Shields said afterward that she wasn’t very comfortable in the role of head coach.

“I could never be a head basketball coach,” she said. “I’m more into soccer and baseball. I think the girls coached themselves at least half of the time.”

Nevertheless, the Lady Cougars put up a challenging fight, battling Chase County to a tie in regulation play. They were defeated 59-50 in overtime. It was their third loss of the season.

After two layups by Cacey Simons, a jump shot by Makenzie Deines, and a free throw by Shelby Makovec, Centre ended the first quarter trailing 9-7.

Most of Centre’s points in the second quarter were made by Shelby Makovec, Brenna Shields, and Simons at the free-throw line. Chase County outscored Centre 18-13, resulting in a 27-20 deficit at halftime.

The Lady Cougars routed Chase County in the third quarter, holding the Bulldogs to just six points while scoring 13. The game was tied at 33 at the end of the quarter.

Centre trailed by four points with less than a minute remaining in the fourth quarter when Shields made two free throws. Chase County turned the ball over on its next possession. With 12 seconds remaining, Amy Makovec made a layup to tie the game at 44 and send it into overtime.

The Lady Bulldogs poured it on in overtime, scoring 15 points compared with six by Centre, handing Centre a nine-point loss. All of Centre’s points were on free throws by Shelby Makovec.

The team made 12 of 24 field goals and 23 of 28 from the free throw line. Makovec made 14 of 18 free throws and two field goals for the game-high 18 points.

Scoring:

S. Makovec, 18; Simons, 15; Shields, 5; Basore, 4; Deines, 4; A. Makovec, 2.
