Brenna Shields, coming off her junior year at Centre High School, brought home a medal from the state track meet. She placed seventh in the 1A girls’ javelin throw.
Shields set a new personal record on her last throw in the preliminaries, which qualified her for the finals by two inches. She set a second personal best in the finals with a throw of 115 feet, 6 inches. That throw was more than five feet farther than her previous personal record.
Shields was Centre’s first medalist since Theo Kassebaum in 2012. She was the first female to earn a medal in the javelin since 2004, when Laura Klenda, now a teacher at Centre, was a finalist.
Graduate Cacey Simons set three new personal records out of the six jumps she took in triple jump. She advanced to the finals but missed medaling by 1½ inches, for a ninth-place finish.
Neither of the girls’ and boys’ 4x100 relay teams passed the preliminaries, but both ran their best time of the season.
