Questions are arising about replacement of road signs by a Kansas Department of Transportation contractor.

On US-56 near Lehigh, a newly installed sign covers another sign.

A new sign at 130th and K-15 already has fallen down.

Some signs are being placed so close to field entrances as to make it difficult, if not impossible, to get implements into fields.

Signs uprooted for replacement lie on the ground for a month or longer.

Signs are being installed closer to the road than before, which shrinks the shoulder space farmers can use to keep equipment as far from the centerline as possible.

According to KDOT public affairs manager Ashley Perez, the work is being done by CC & I Engineering, doing business as Compass Consultants, from Perham, Minnesota. The company is being paid $385,106.80.

KDOT asked the contractor last week for an updated completion date, but has not received a response.

“KDOT is on the project inspecting project work,” Perez said.

She did not answer a question about where else the company had worked.
