Slow start keeps Lady Warriors down

Staff writer

The Marion High School girls’ basketball team lost 46-26 to Moundridge Tuesday after failing to score in the first quarter.

Turnovers hurt the Lady Warriors early, and the Wildcats converted on offense, scoring 11 points in the first quarter. Marion struggled to overcome the early deficit the rest of the game.

Kaelyn Thierolf got Marion on the scoreboard less than a minute into the second quarter, later followed by a Kelli Hess 3-pointer and an inbound jump shot from Katey Ehrlich.

The Lady Warriors cut the lead to 15-7, but a 3 by Moundridge’s Mackenzie Suderman stopped Marion’s momentum and the Wildcats led 22-7 at halftime.

Marion scored its highest output in the third quarter, led by Hess and Bailey Robson, who each scored five. The Lady Warriors outscored Moundridge 13-10 in the quarter, still trailing 32-20.

Michelle Schrag made a 3-pointer for the Wildcats at the beginning of the fourth quarter, starting an 8-0 run that put the game out of reach.

Scoring

K. Thierolf, 4; K. Hess, 8; K. Ehrlich, 3; Kirsten Hansen, 4; B. Robson, 7.
