Centre’s Kate Basore and Barrett Smith finished in the top four in events at the regional track meet Friday at Frankfort, qualifying them to compete this week at the state meet in Wichita.
Basore finished third in javelin with a throw of 132 feet, four inches in her final attempt, setting a new personal record by more than five feet.
Smith finished third in preliminaries in shot put, but fell into fifth place in the finals before his final throw of 41-5.75 gave him a fourth-place finish. Coach Alan Stahlecker said Smith’s fourth-place throw was a mere 1.25 inches farther than the fifth-place finisher.
Basore will compete Friday at 3 p.m., and Smith will compete Friday at 4:45 p.m.
The other Centre placer at the regional meet was Xavier Espinoza, who finished the 400 in 54.23 seconds for sixth place.
