Smith, Burns resign from USD 397

Staff writer

The Centre USD 397 Board of Education accepted Monday the resignations of junior/senior high school principal Nadine Smith and first-grade teacher Phyllis Burns, effective June 30.

Burns will be retiring after 20 years of teaching at Centre Elementary School.

Smith is advancing to a higher administrative level. She has accepted a position as superintendent of Rock Hills USD 107 at Mankato, beginning July 1.

The board thanked these employees for their years of dedicated service to the school district.

The board approved a motion to postpone decisions on possible cost-cutting measures until the March meeting. Under consideration for possible elimination are transportation to swimming lessons, Healthy Living Camp transportation, subsidies for summer ball programs, summer weights, and student insurance for summer recreation programs.

Much of the meeting was spent in executive sessions. No actions were taken upon returning to open session.

The board spent 15 minutes in private to evaluate Superintendent Jerri Kemble’s performance. She joined them for a few minutes.

The board spent at least another 30 minutes in executive session with Kemble and clerk Peggy Falen to discuss personnel. This was followed by a private session to discuss terms and conditions for employment of certificated personnel for the 2010-2011 school term.
