Smith receives award

Marion Senior Center correspondent

A volunteer of the month award was presented to Barb Smith for her work with Kansas Department for Aging and Disability Services.

Smith prepares income tax returns at the senior center. She received a check from the agency and a gift card.

Shirley Bowers brought in the first vase of spring flowers from her yard on April 10.

Head cook Kathy West and Janet Bryant attended advanced courses at an annual mandatory training session April 11 in Minneapolis. That same day, quilter Sue Clough honored volunteers Shirley Bowers and Evelyn Jewett, who oversee the craft corner and quilting at the senior center.

Knowing that senior center patrons also save a variety of objects, Marion Elementary School Principal Justin Wasmuth called and requested senior center patrons to save specific items for students’ use. There is a list at the center for those who wish to help with this project.

Senior Center Day was April 16. Gayla Ratzlaff presented a program on hospital admissions, categories of care, as well as what Medicare pays for. Seven women from Lincolnville attended. Richard and Marilyn Riemer of Hillsboro also attended. The Riemers will also offer an AARP driving course May 12 and 13 at the center.

Sylvia Helmer’s birthday was also April 16. She provided ice cream cups for everyone.
