Smith seeks fairness in bids

Holdeman wants to restrict female cottonwood trees

Marion City Councilman Steven Smith wants other bulk fuel distributors in the area to have a fair chance to bid on fuel for city vehicles.

City administrator David Mayfield presented information to the council Monday afternoon from Cardie Oil Company of Tampa. Two options were provided by Cardie Oil. One option would be for Cardie Oil to supply pumps and meters to the city with the city required to exclusively purchase fuel from Cardie Oil. The second option would be for the city to purchase its own bulk fuel pumps and meters. The city then could take competitive bids for fuel.

Mayfield said if the city was to purchase its own equipment, it could cost between $8,000 and $10,000, so he recommended the city go with the first option.

“Shouldn’t other companies be given the opportunity to bid?” Smith asked. Mayfield responded that he wasn’t sure if Cooperative Grain & Supply of Hillsboro provided tanks but was willing to gather additional information and present it at the next council meeting.

After further discussion with city attorney Dan Baldwin, councilman Bill Holdeman wants an ordinance that would restrict the planting of female cottonwood trees. Baldwin will present an ordinance at the next council meeting.

Holdeman also asked Baldwin about prohibiting all tobacco use on city property. Baldwin said the council could have a policy that prohibits employees from smoking or chewing tobacco on city property but can’t stop the public from chewing tobacco.
