Father Michael Donghyun Chang, principal of Salesian High School in South Korea, visited Pilsen on Nov. 26. He was accompanied by two teachers from the school.

They were joined by David and Raymond Kapaun, Father John Hotze’s assistant Scott Carter, and two Korean students.

The visitors from Korea told tour guides that while investigating the history of their school for its 60th anniversary, they discovered their school had been built to honor Father Kapaun’s memory. His picture has been included in the anniversary book they compiled.

Harriet Bina said the visitors wanted to see the place where Kapaun grew up and to learn about his history. They displayed a large banner at Kapaun/Mount Carmel High School in Wichita and again at Pilsen that declared they were traveling from South Korea to Wichita to learn about Father Kapaun.

The altar society prepared a noon meal for them following Sunday Mass, after which they toured the church and museum.

They presented the museum with books written by the late Father Arthur Tonne that had been translated into Korean. They also presented a plaque, which now hangs in the museum.

“It was truly an honor to get the opportunity to visit with them,” Bina said. “Father Kapaun and many other servicemen died to keep the people of South Korea free from communism. We were thrilled that they came so far to honor the memory of Father Kapaun.”
