Sports teams to vie for dance trophy

Staff writer

Sports and dance moves will be on display Monday as Marion High School basketball players and wrestlers take over USD 408 Sports and Aquatics Center for the fourth annual Marion High School Winter Jam.

The event kicks off at 7 p.m. with introductions of the MHS wrestlers, boys and girls basketball players, and cheerleaders.

Audience members will be selected at random by cheerleaders to participate in games as a warm-up to the team dance competition.

“The girls basketball team is defending their dance title,” MHS Principal Tod Gordon said. “The wrestling team won the first one. The boys basketball team has never won.

“We have a plaque in the gym for the winner of the dance contest,” Gordon said.

Eagle Communications has donated prizes for audience members and a pizza party for the team dance winners, Gordon said.

The fun and games will be followed by exhibitions of wrestling, girls basketball, and boys basketball. The winners of the dance competition will be announced following the exhibitions.

Gordon acknowledged MCTV, Eagle Communications, and MHS cheerleaders for their roles in making past Winter Jams successful.

“Over the years Mike Powers, Gene Winkler, Mickey Lundy, and Kevin Fruechting have been tremendous,” Gordon said. “Cheerleading sponsors Diane Jeffrey and Susan Hall have also worked hard to make this a great event.”

Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Marion County will host a soup supper prior to Winter Jam, beginning at 5:30 p.m., Gordon said.
