Stahlecker to end long coaching career at Centre

He led his basketball team to state competition for four consecutive years

Staff writer

Alan Stahlecker has resigned as a coach at Centre, effective at the end of the school year.

After being an assistant coach in girls basketball and track, he became the head coach in both sports in the 2009-2010 school year.

He coached 17 seasons of high school girls basketball, the last 12 as head coach.

He took his team to the IA Division 1 state tournament four consecutive years. In the first three years — 2012, 2013, and 2014 — the Cougars lost in the first round. In 2015, they finished 2-1 and took home a third-place trophy.

Stahlecker will be coaching track this spring for the last time after 20 years. He was an assistant for eight seasons.

He has been the pastor of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Lincolnville ever since he became an ordained minister in 1993. He said changes in his pastoral ministry within his church and the area led to his resignation.

“It is the right time for me, and 20 years of coaching seemed sufficient,” he said.
