State gives thumbs-down to county storage building

State officials rejected Marion County’s plan to use part of a COVID-19 relief grant to build a $33,473 storage facility for personal protective equipment.
Planned was a 24-by-30 foot storage facility, which would be 11 feet tall, to be used to store personal protection and first response equipment for law enforcement agencies in the county.
The storage unit was approved by a task force that mapped out how to spend $2.4 million in grant money.
The county planned to pay for the unit with some of its $433,000 share of a Strengthening People and Revitalizing Kansas grant from the state.
Originally the county planned to buy an emergency response trailer and build a storage building east of the sheriff’s office.
When state officials reviewed the proposal, they rejected the storage building. The $33,473 will be redirected to aid non-profits.
