Students learn about fire safety

Staff writer

Students at Marion Elementary School should be safer after firefighters visited school Tuesday to teach them what they need to know in a fire.

“Once a year, Marion, Florence, Hillsboro fire fighters visit the Marion Elementary School to do fire prevention week,” Marion assistant fire chief Eric Hardey said.

Firefighters teach classes at all elementary levels, preschool through fifth grade.

Firefighters work with individual classes, doing different activities with kids to demonstrate fire safety.

“This year we brought our fire prevention house,” Hardey said.

The inflatable fire prevention house is similar to a bouncy house but without the bounce.

“It’s about 30 minutes per class seen throughout the day,” Hardey said.

Safe Kids county coordinator Erin Hein also was present at the demonstration.

“I talk to them about a number of different safety topics, and fire prevention is one of them, so I get to partner with all of the fire departments in Marion County and help teach kids about fire prevention,” Hein said.
