Suspect flees into county before surrendering

A man fleeing police after allegedly threatening someone with a weapon at a Herington convenience store drove south on US-77 into Marion County late Thursday, sending sheriff’s deputies and police officers from Marion, Hillsboro, and Peabody, as well as emergency medical personnel, scrambling to the scene.

Sheriff Rob Craft said the suspect stopped at 220th Rd. and US-77 and was talking on his cell phone to a Herington officer pursuing him.

“We went up there, and the guy surrendered to Herington,” Craft said.

Ambulance personnel waited first at the US-56/77/K-150 roundabout then moved to 220th Rd. and US-77. The suspect declined medical treatment.
