Tabor professor, facilities manager honored

A Tabor College professor and its facilities manager were honored Aug. 11 for their service to the college.

Art professor Shin-hee Chin was chosen as the college’s 21st annual faculty member of the year Aug. 11.

The 14-year employee was given a plaque by academic dean Frank Johnson at an all-employee dinner.

Her selection was based on commendations from students and peers.

“Shin-hee cares about her students and wants them to succeed,” Johnson read from students’ remarks. “She cares so much that she shipped me supplies in the middle of the pandemic because I had none. Shin-hee demonstrates what Tabor stands for and I am honored to have been taught by her.”

Chin said she believed art classes sparked imagination and creativity.

“We are created in the image of God,” she said. “I hope students would fully enjoy the delights of art-making and learning through trials and errors.”

Chin is an internationally known artist who has displayed work in juried solo and group exhibits throughout the nation, the Republic of Korea, Japan, and France.

“Professor Chin is a gifted artist,” Johnson said. “This award acknowledges that she’s also a remarkable colleague and treasured member of the Tabor faculty.”

Jason Schroeder received a Staff Excellence Award.

Schroeder, facilities coordinator and custodial manager at Tabor, comes from a long line of family experience with Tabor.

Schroeder’s time at the college, and that of his father, Vince Schroeder, mother, Marcia Schroeder, and grandparents Ken and Ruby Schroeder, totals 100 years.

“I really care about the students and serving them,” Schroeder said.
