Talk of confession delays release of Huffman arrest details

Staff writer

Information about what led to the arrest of Marion County’s former economic development director may be delayed another week at the request of her attorney, who in court filings has raised the issue of whether she may have confessed.

Wichita lawyer John Stang on Wednesday filed court documents saying he will represent former Marion County economic development director Teresa L. Huffman, charged with felony misuse of public funds.

On the same day, Stang filed a motion seeking information in the case including any statements or confessions made by Huffman, witnesses to such confessions, reports of any physical or mental examinations, and other evidence known to the prosecution. He also filed a motion seeking to delay public release of a court document containing that same information.

District Court Clerk Jan Helmer said Stang hopes for a week’s delay before the court releases the probable cause affidavit, as requested last week by the Marion County Record.

Huffman was county economic development director until she resigned in May 2017.

The charge is a level 7 felony.
