Task force leads to more child porn charges in county

Staff writer

A Peabody man was charged Thursday after a Sedgwick County task force that monitors online sexual exploitation of children reported him to the county attorney’s office.

Marshall R. Swanson, 60, Peabody, formally was charged with 12 counts of sexual exploitation of a child for allegedly possessing visual depictions of a child younger than 18 engaging in sexually explicit conduct.

The task force investigates Internet trading of pornography involving children. Its investigations have led to the arrests of three other Marion County suspects and one Oklahoma man charged with exploiting a Marion County child.

Other Marion County suspects arrested because of the task force’s investigation include Alan M. Overton, Miles MW Rickard, and Bane Spurlin.

Overton, 22, Marion, was charged June 15 with 19 counts of sexual exploitation of a child and 15 counts of breach of privacy. He pleaded no contest Oct. 17 to three counts of sexual exploitation of a child and one count of breach of privacy. The remaining counts were dismissed.

He was sentenced Feb. 8, but the sentencing document is not available on online court records. According to the county jail roster, he is serving a six-month sentence.

Rickard, 21, Peabody, was charged Aug. 2 with five counts of sexual exploitation of a child and 24 counts of aggravated Internet trading of child pornography. His case is still in progress.

Spurlin, 20, Hillsboro, was charged April 14 with four counts of sexual exploitation of a child, June 16 with two counts of sexual exploitation of a child, and June 30 with an additional count of sexual exploitation of a child.

In a Nov. 14 plea deal, Spurlin pleaded no contest to three counts of sexual exploitation of a child. The remaining charges were dismissed.

Online court records indicate he was sentenced to community corrections, but do not show the length of his sentence.

Cecil Rodman, Hominy, Oklahoma, was charged Dec. 5, 2022, with two counts of exploitation of a Marion County child. He pleaded no contest May 9 to both counts and was sentenced July 17 to 36 months’ community corrections.

Three other county residents were charged with similar offenses, but none of their cases were investigated by the task force.
