Tennis coach seeks focus

Staff writer

Hillsboro boys’ tennis coach Stuart Holmes said it is still too early to tell which of the four team members will earn varsity spots, but he said he is already seeing focus and determination.

“The guys seem focused and really looking forward to the season,” Holmes said. “As our guys dedicate themselves to getting better, they will find the satisfaction that goes with working hard as well as increased measures of success.”

Two letter winners, seniors Ty Carey and River Cecil, return this season. They are joined by two new teammates, Leo Sontag and Josh Funk.

Holmes said he doesn’t know who will play what varsity spots, or who will play singles or doubles. Last season Carey and Cecil played as a team, but Holmes said this season they could play individually.

“Every day we will be looking to improve in practice and make progress throughout the season,” Holmes said. “Tennis provides a great opportunity to challenge yourself mentally as well as physically and we want to grow in both areas each day whether at practice or in competition.”

Those improvements, Holmes hopes, will allow the team to compete this season with what he says are some of the best 2A and 3A players in the state.

“I’m looking forward to the season as we’ll focus on helping all players improve, being competitive, and working to help each player have a positive experience,” he said.
