Terry Nystrom

Services for Terry Eugene Nystrom, 74, Marion, who died Feb. 4, were this morning at Burns Cornerstone Bible Church.

Born July 3, 1950, in Wichita to Myron and June (Spurgin) Nystrom, he graduated from Derby High School in 1968 and joined the Navy, serving as a door gunner on a helicopter in Vietnam.

As an aircraft mechanic, he pulled his crew out of a burning hangar after a plane crashed into it and exploded.

After being honorably discharged, he drove a truck, was an auto mechanic, and worked as a sheriff’s officer.

In 1976, he married Patricia (Stewart) Sallee. They lived in Burns for most of their nearly 49 years of marriage and in 2014 fulfilled his lifelong dream of owning a small farm.

Outside of work, he was a member of the American Legion and a Legion Rider.

Daughter Kathy preceded him in death. Survivors include wife, children Terry Nystrom of Central Square, New York; Tina Spencer of Peabody; and Amanda Meerian of Topeka; siblings Robert Nystrom of Holly Lake Ranch, Texas; Connie Millheim of Valley Springs, Arkansas; Deborah Maltbie of Andover; Pamela Lewis of Derby; and Daniel Nystrom of Libertyville, Iowa; and eight grandchildren.
