Track resurfacing causes home meets to be held out of town

Staff writer

This year, two Marion High School home track meets will be held out of town due to delays in track resurfacing at Warrior Stadium.

Grant Thierolf, Marion’s head track coach and athletic director said the “re-rubberization” process had been put off several times and he had received no indication of the date that it would be finished.

“We’re starting to get a little antsy,” Thierolf said. “We had hoped they would do it last summer. Then we hoped it would happen in the fall. Then we thought it would happen over spring break.”

All annoyances aside, he said the delays have had no perceived effect on track practice, and it only seems like a “big deal” because of the anticipation in waiting for something good to happen.

“We practiced for so long on an unrubberized track to know that it doesn’t really make a difference,” he said. “It just effects the location of these first couple meets.”

This year, Marion will host the Marion Relays on Friday at Herington’s track — field events start at 3:30 p.m. and running events commence at 5 p.m.

Marion will also host a second track meet Tuesday at Tabor College with all events beginning at 4:30 p.m.
