Treasurer gives sale positive review

County treasurer Susan Berg said Saturday’s tax sale brought so much money, she could not remember a more successful sale.
“I think overall it went very smoothly,” Berg told commissioners Monday, adding that advance registration had helped. There were 40 people who registered early.
Berg said 58 people got numbers to bid, and the total collection was $54,950. The highest price paid for a single house was $7,000.
Only two sales, both for severed mineral, went for the minimum bid of $50.
Commissioners Monday voted unanimously to send out a request for remodeling proposals for a former beauty salon the county first bought for $160,000 for potential use as a health department. The commission discarded that idea when they learned after commissioners found out renovating the building for a health department would cost $693,700.
Then commissioners decided to use the building for road and bridge, emergency management, and planning and zoning offices.
In a concept diagram, the 46 x 64½ foot building would have four offices for road and bridge, a shared area for road and bridge and planning and zoning, two offices for planning and zoning, an office for emergency management, a storage room, a work room, a kitchen, and a conference room.
On Monday, they selected a bid from Alloy Architecture to design a health department building at a former food bank site at 1220 E. Main St. in Marion.
Commissioners approved conditional use permits for a kayak rental business at rural Hillsboro and a short term rental house at the county lake.
