Hillsboro’s girls picked up their fifth consecutive victory Friday, going up a class to beat Class 3A Hesston in a close-fought 43-38 battle at home.
Hillsboro and Centre both will be hosts for tournaments this week, with the three remaining county teams — Goessel, Marion, and Peabody-Burns — all participating in the Centre tournament.
For Hillsboro in Friday’s game, point guard Amyah Werth led her team with 19 points, including 9 scored from beyond the arc.
Ella Potucek scored 10. Kingzley Ratzlaff had seven.
“Huge win for our team tonight against one of the best teams in 3A and our league,” coach Micah Ratzlaff said. “The girls played extremely hard, and our coaching staff couldn’t be any prouder of the effort our girls gave for four quarters.”
Hillsboro‘s Trojan Classic tournament began Tuesday with additional games to be played Friday and Saturday.
Peabody-Burns
The Warriors suffered a tough 39-32 loss on the road Friday night against Wakefield.
Sarah Winfrey led Peabody-Burns with 19 points.
The winless Warriors opened the Centre tournament against Goessel.
“Since we already played Goessel, we’ll build off that going into our first game of the Centre tournament,” coach Linsey Foth said before the game. “We know what needs to be done each game; it’s just about putting it all together and continuing to work on it.”
Goessel
Canton-Galva took command of the Goessel gym in the second quarter Friday.
Goessel led 14-13 at the end of the first period, but the Eagles scored 12 consecutive points to lead 32-20 at halftime.
Mackenzie Voth, Delaney Duerksen and Abi Johnson put points on the board in the third quarter, but the Eagles surged to a 45-27 lead after three periods and won by a final score of 59-31.
Voth led the Bluebirds with 13 points. Hailey Rosfeld had a season high seven points for the second game in a row.
The Goessel girls are now 2-2 in the Wheat State League and 5-4 overall.
The Bluebirds went into the Cougar Classic as the top seed Tuesday.
Marion
Marion lost its road game Friday at Inman, 54-24.
“Inman came out in the first quarter and blitzed us,” coach Jason Hett said. “Their length, speed, and athleticism got to us early.”
Dylan Kraus led the Warriors with eight points and three rebounds.
Kate Wessel scored seven and pulled down five rebounds.
“After the first quarter, we settled in and competed well and battled with them for three quarters,” Hett said. “We just dug too big of a hole early.”
The Warriors (5-6) headed into the Cougar Classic as the No. 3 seed out of eight teams.
“I like where we are at, and what we have been doing,” Hett said. “We will look to play to our identity this week and want to be playing in the championship game on Saturday.”
Centre
Centre lost 49-20 on the road Friday against Rural Vista .
The Cougar girls entered the tournament as the No. 4 seed.
