Trojan wrestler earns record-tying pin

Winning his third tournament championship of the year, Hillsboro senior Tristan Rathbone earned his 72nd career pin at this weekend’s Eureka Invitations.

Rathbone, 24-2 for the year in the 170-pound weight class, now is tied with Nicholas Mueller for the most career pins in Hillsboro High School history.

“Probably the performance of the tournament,” coach Scott O’Hare said, “was by junior Lane Rogers with his third place finish, including a big win in the consolation finals over Cal Kohlmeier of Chase County.”

Rogers is now 16-5 for the year in the 182-pound class.

Senior Garrett Helmer, 22-4 in the 152-pound class, placed third behind two Class 4A state finalists.

Sophomore Anthony Fickes, 8-8 in the 120-pound class, battled back from an early round loss to finish fifth, including a win victory over an opponent he had lost to in December.

Overall, Hillsboro placed seventh out of 25 teams in the tournament. Marion placed 21st. Marion junior Chance Shults, 11-8, placed fourth in the 132-pound class, and freshman Kellen Waner, 6-15, placed sixth in the 113-pound class.
