Trojans extend 4-game streak

Staff writer

Hillsboro extended its four-game winning streak Friday, and Goessel came up with a homecoming victory.

But the county’s three other teams had lopsided losses.

Hillsboro

The Trojans, now ranked ninth in the state in Class 2A, won their fourth game in a row Friday night, beating Halstead 61-45 at home.

Lincoln Wichert scored 22 points. Noah Beavers had 14, and Seth Driggers, 12.

“We knew we were going to have to find a way to slow down their scoring by playing team defense,” coach Kyle Kroeker said. “Again, I was very proud of our defensive effort.”

Hillsboro jumped out to an early lead and maintained it throughout the game.

“We hope to continue this momentum we have right now,” Kroeker said.

The Trojans will be back at home again Friday to play Council Grove.

Goessel

Although the Goessel boys scored first, a 9-0 run by Wakefield had the Bluebirds playing from behind for most of the game Friday.

The Bluebirds managed only four points in the second quarter and trailed 18-10 at halftime. They continued to trail 25-14 with less than four minutes to play in the third quarter before their offense came to life.

Jack Nickel scored four points, and Koy Smith hit a three-pointer to draw the Bluebirds within four as the quarter ended.

Nickel scored seven points in the fourth period, Koy Smith connected again from long range, and Trey Gaddis weaved through traffic for a layup to give Goessel a 35-30 lead.

The Bluebirds connected on just enough free-throws to seal their third victory of the season, 38-30.

Nickel led the team with 13 points, all in the second half. Koy Smith had 13 for the game.

The Goessel boys are now 3-13 and 2-4 in the Wheat State League.

They will travel Friday to Herington (4-10 and 2-3).

Marion

The Warriors got hit with a sizable loss Friday night, losing 72-37 at home against Moundridge.

Luke Wessel leads the team in scoring, averaging 11.9 points a game. He also leads with 3.3 steals a game. Jackson Howard averages 9.6 rebounds a game. Point guard Carson Krause is averaging 3.1 assists per game.

The Warriors’ next game will be on the road Friday against Sedgwick.

Centre

The Cougars experienced a lopsided loss Friday night against Little River, losing 72-36.

Senior Robert Spohn, back in the lineup after injury, led the team with 12 points and five rebounds. Noah Brunner scored nine and pulled down four rebounds. Brady Idleman finished with seven points and four rebounds.

“The team matched up with a very solid Little River squad,” coach Richard Idleman said. “Although we may have lost, there were a number of positives from this game we will take and build upon those positives. [I’m] proud of the way our team fought throughout the game,”

Centre will travel Friday to county rival Peabody-Burns.

Peabody-Burns

The Warriors lost 70-35 Friday to Canton-Galva.

Jameson Miles led the team with 19 points and 11 rebounds.

Peabody-Burns will host county rival Centre this Friday.
