VFW auxiliary meets

The ladies’ auxiliary of VFW Post 6958 met Sept. 9 at the post home. Eight members were present for the meeting, which was conducted by president Donna Kreutziger.

Correspondence was shared from Lori Kirkpatrick, librarian at Marion Elementary School, Ann Boese, the family of Alice Van Buren, and the National Home for Children.

Three boxes of comfort items were sent to three servicemen in August.

A report on the Labor Day Buddy Poppy campaign at Florence was given. One hundred seventy poppies were distributed. Donations totaled $142.66 for the relief fund to help with veterans’ assistance programs. Volunteers were Donna Kreutziger, Nicky Hoffman, Mary Ford, and Kim Richardson and daughters.

Membership for 2008-09 shows 86 paid members. Thirty-nine members still need to pay dues to bring the membership to 100 percent.

The Cancer Aid and Research program will collect loose change as a fund-raiser.

Members were encouraged to vote in the November election.

Information about the Voice of Democracy, Patriots Pen, and endowment scholarship programs is now in schools and has been published in the Marion County Record.

Two flags were donated in August. Pledge of Allegiance bookmarks were given to Marion Elementary School and Peabody-Burns Elementary School libraries.

Members were reminded that Friday is POW-MIA Recognition Day.

Gold Star Motheres Day is Sept. 28.

October is cookie month for Colmery-O’Neill VA, Topeka. Members are asked to bring school supplies to the October meeting.

At the November meeting, members should bring comfort items (alcohol-free health items) for Colmery-O’Neill VA.

Applesauce will be given to area nursing homes in December.

The next meeting will be at 7 p.m. Oct. 14 at the post home. Members are asked to bring snacks for social time.

The November meeting will be at 2 p.m. Nov. 18 to avoid conflict with the Veterans Day soup lunch.

The December meeting will be at noon Dec. 9 with a potluck meal.

The meeting closed according to ritual and with prayers for National Home, POW-MIAs, and our troops.
