Victim unclear in family sex case

Staff writer

Marion police are struggling with a complicated investigation involving a 38-year-old woman having sex with her stepfather.

The case originally was brought to officers as a case of sexual battery. As of July 1, officers also were investigating the case as prostitution.

The mother of the 38-year-old initially reported the case to Marion police that her daughter was the victim of repeated sexual battery at the hands of her husband, the woman’s stepfather.

The 38-year-old woman lives in Marion. Her mother and stepfather live in Wichita.

Police moved forward with the investigation. They then spoke with the stepfather, who said his stepdaughter had offered sexual favors in exchange for money.

After interviewing the 38-year-old again, Police Chief Tyler Mermis said she admitted trading sex for money but did not think she did anything wrong.

Mermis previously reported on June 29 the woman suffered from a mental disability. He said Tuesday that the disorder is more psychological and the woman was of a sound mind to consent to sex.

Mermis said the woman was receiving counseling at Prairie View in Hillsboro.

Mermis said police are still investigating every possibility in the case.
