Victories, losses seem to come in equal numbers

The Warriors captured fourth in the 16th annual Marion Classic after losing 62-40 Saturday to Wichita Home School.

Marion beat up on Eureka, 55-41, Friday night but was unable to repeat against Wichita the next day.

Jack Lanning was the sole athlete from Marion to make the boys all-tournament team.

Marion as a whole received the sportsmanship trophy of the tournament.

The Warriors will be at home Thursday to play against Douglas.


After a dominate 60-45 victory Friday over Lyons, the Trojans were unable to repeat that performance Saturday against Inman, losing 44-39.

“It was a tight game in the first half. They switched defense regularly, which led to a stagnant offense,” coach Kyle Kroeker said. “In the fourth quarter, I was proud of our willingness to fight back into the game.”

Nash Dickinson led the team with nine points and six rebounds.

Wyatt Plenert, Seth Driggers, Lincoln Wichert, and Noah Beavers each scored seven .

“We took a one point lead with about two minutes left. The ensuing defensive possession, Inman retook the lead and we were unable to pull off the win,” Kroeker said.

The Trojans hit the road for the last time in this 2023 year to play against Southeast of Saline on Friday.


Although the Bluebird boys led 16-10 at the end of the first quarter against Canton-Galva in the first game of the weeklong Bluebird Classic, the Eagles poured in 14 unanswered points, and Goessel played from behind in the second half.

Seven different players contributed points for the Bluebirds in the third quarter as Goessel sneaked ahead, 40-36.

Goessel built a 12 point lead in the fourth quarter and survived an Eagle rally to win, 57-52. Noah Schrag led the team with 20 points, followed by Jack Nickel and Koy Smith with 12 and 10 points respectively.

The offense for Goessel was inconsistent Friday night against Elyria Christian on. A running clock was in play the whole fourth quarter as Elyria defeated Goessel ,67-19.

Layups and three pointers were the name of the game on Saturday, as Goessel faced off against Wichita Defenders.

The Bluebirds led 15-9 at the end of the first quarter and led 28-21 at half. Aggressive defense led to many points in the third quarter as the Bluebirds went on a 12-0 run and coasted to a 61-42 victory.

Noah Schrag led the team with 30 points. Jack Nickel scored 16 ,and Koy Smith added 10.

Goessel (2-2) for the season and will play Friday at Rural Vista.


The Cougars lost 44-28 Saturday to Rural Vista to close out a tournament in Herington. Centre will hit the road this Friday to play Canton-Galva.


The Warriors beat Marais des Cygnes, 47-35, Friday but no information has been made available about Saturday’s results, if any.

Athletic director Brook Witty did say that Cade Gossen and Christopher Spencer had been honored as part of the all-academic team for the Marais Des Cygnes tournament.

The Warriors will be host to Herington this Friday.
