It wasn’t a banner week for county volleyball teams, but Marion and Centre are looking forward to the Cougar Classic this weekend.
Marion
The Warriors split four matches on the road Saturday at the Pratt Skyline tournament.
“I want to share how proud I am of how the Marion Warrior volleyball team competed this past Saturday,” coach Keri Collett said.
The Warriors lost to Medicine Lodge early but bounced back against Central Christian and Ashland.
They were tied against Hodgeman County but lost the third game of the match.
“Our first game against Hodgeman County was a thriller that ended in a hard fought 35-37 overtime loss,” Collett said. “The girls bounced back to take the second set handily and jumped ahead early in the third before Hodgeman County managed to come back.”
For the day, Shyann Harris led in aces and service receives. Shaliah Ensley led in kills. Hailey Harshman led in assists.
“What stood out to me the most was the girls’ fight and heart,” Collett said. “They never gave up, encouraged each other constantly, and hustled all over the court, rarely letting the ball drop without a huge effort.”
The Warriors be at Centre this Saturday for the Cougar Classic.
“This group has so much potential, and once we match performance to that potential, will be very hard to beat,” Collett said.
Marion’s first home games for the season won’t be until Spike Fest on Sept. 20.
“They are an exciting team to watch, and I’d love for the community to come out and support us at Spikefest soon,” Collett said.
Goessel
The Bluebirds travelled to Bennington for a dual meet Thursday.
Goessel improved as the night progressed but lost to the Bulldogs, 14-25, 19-25, 22-25.
Goessel has started the season with a tough schedule, playing two schools that participated in state championships in November.
The Bluebirds are now 1-2 and will begin Wheat State League competition Tuesday at home against Elyria.
Goessel will be host for a tournament Saturday with seven other schools, starting at 8:30 a.m.
Hillsboro
The Trojans were 4-3 heading into Tuesday’s road matches against Cheney and Hesston.
Hillsboro is tied 1-1 head-to-head against Hesston this season.
The next few matches of the season will be tournament play Saturday at Southeast of Saline.
Centre
The Cougars looked to capture their first victory Tuesday night in a quad match against Canton-Galva and Little River.
Centre was 0-1 for the season going into the matches.
Its next games will be their Cougar Classic at home Saturday at home with Marion joining in.
Peabody-Burns
The Warriors were 1-7-1 for the season heading into their Tuesday night matches against Canton-Galva and Little River.
