Wanted: Overweight dogs

Is it possible to love your dog too much? It is if you feed your canine companions the wrong foods or even too much food that’s good for pooches.

For that reason, Animal Health Center of Marion County is sponsoring “Biggest Loser Contest, Dog Edition.”

“Probably about 30 percent of our patients that are dogs are overweight,” Jessica Laurin, veterinarian and owner of the health center, said.

Many pet owners “love” their animals by giving them treats — such as table scraps, sweets, and other foods that are not good for canines — or unlimited access to dog food.

Short and long-term complications that can come from excess weight for dogs include diabetes, arthritis, heart disease, and respiratory problems, all resulting in a less than enjoyable life for the pet.

“Other contributing factors are lack of exercise and age,” Laurin said.

The contest will begin Thursday and is available for dogs that are patients of Animal Health Center and are at least 20 percent overweight.

Weight loss will be monitored by percentage, not pounds, so small dogs will have the same opportunity as larger dogs.

Dogs will be weighed every four weeks during a four-month period. No specific food is required but diet dog food is recommended.

Prior to beginning the weight-loss program, dogs will have a free pre-qualification consultation to determine a healthy weight, discuss a meal plan, and have a “before” photo taken.

The winner of the contest will receive a free annual exam including vaccinations and intestinal parasite screening.
