Warrior wrestlers ready for second half

It will be 28 days between varsity wrestling matches for Marion High School when it plays host Jan. 8 to a dual at the USD 408 Sports and Aquatics Center.

With the Minneapolis dual, which was scheduled this past Thursday at Marion, postponed because of inclement weather, the Warriors have a month to prepare for their next match.

“It’s a good break to have,” MHS head coach Chad Adkins said. “We have a lot of technique stuff to focus on, and some of them need to start focusing on grades.”

Adkins is happy with the way his team has wrestled, and thinks the best is yet to come in the second semester.

The Warriors are 1-4 in duals, but have lost most of their points because of open weight classes.

“We’ve beat everybody we’ve wrestled on the mat,” Adkins said.

The more experienced wrestlers on the roster have performed well so far this year.

The four returning state-qualifiers, Dillon Wildin, Cody Wildin, Tylor Neil, and Andy Shipman, have combined to go 42-7 this season.

Throw in senior Adam Regnier, and Adkins’ top-five wrestlers are 52-11.

“The kids I expected to do well are fine,” Adkins said.

The break should give some of the younger wrestlers time to fine-tune their skills and come out ready Jan. 8 for the home meet.

Adkins thinks the second semester will be good to his team.

“They’re on their way to where they need to be.”

Heading into the break, Dillon Wildin still holds the top 1-3A state ranking at 140-pounds, and Cody Wildin is fourth at 130-pounds.

The Warriors will play host Jan. 6 to a home dual at the USD 408 Sports and Aquactics Center.
