Warriors split home run derby with Hillsboro

Staff writer

The Marion High School baseball team lost the first game Friday in a doubleheader with Hillsboro, 21-4, but won the second contest, 13-7.

The Trojans were already up 8-0 in the first game, on the strength of a two-RBI hit by Aaron Bina and a two-RBI single by Jacob Fish, when Tyler Ediger hit a three-run home run to make the score 11-0 in the first inning.

The Warriors scored four runs in the bottom of the first — Brian Fruechting and Wil Case each had RBI singles — to make the score 11-4.

But, Ediger and Bina added an RBI to their totals with back-to-back hits in the second inning. The next inning Fish hit in Luke Moore and Jacob Edwards hit a two-RBI single to score Devin Funk and Fish. Ediger added a run with an RBI single before Ben Gardner capped the inning with a three-run big fly of his own.

The Warriors would have their revenge in the second game.

Hillsboro jumped out to a four-run advantage in the first inning, two runs coming off another Ediger home run. The Warriors answered in the bottom of the frame when Colten Olsen hit a two-run homer, Cole Lewman had a three-RBI round tripper, and Isaac Hett hit a three-run blast to give the Warriors an 8-4 lead.

All three home runs were assisted by a stiff wind blowing to left field.

The Warriors continued their offensive onslaught with two runs in the third inning — RBI walks by Fruechting and Case — and three runs in the fifth inning. Marshall Ragland, the Warriors starting pitcher, hit a fly ball that deflected from the top of the wall in center field and scored Case and Adam Maag, but Lewman was called out at the plate attempting to score a third run on the double.

Fruechting pitched the fifth and sixth innings, holding the Trojans to a run, and Case ascended the mound in the ninth, and got a two-out save, which included causing a fly out by Ediger.

The Warriors are now 7-11 on the season.
