Warriors split matches at Berean

Staff writer

Marion High School head volleyball coach Deanna Thierolf likes that her team never gives up, but cannot figure how the team gets off to such bad starts.

“We’re talking to them about their nutrition, we’re talking to them about everything,” she said.

Tuesday night, the Warriors lost to Ell-Saline in three sets, afterward defeating host Berean in two.

Marion began each set against Ell-Saline down by sizable margins, 0-9, 5-15, and 2-8.

“It’s on us,” Thierolf said. “We know what we have to do, we just have to do it.”

The Warriors fell short 20-25 the first game, making the most of momentum in the second.

With help from Ell-Saline errors, Marion cut a 10-point deficit to three at 17-20. Behind the service of Kaelyn Thierolf, the Warriors scored eight points in a row to take a 24-20 lead, eventually winning 25-22. Marion lost the third set 19-25.

The Warriors did not struggle starting against Berean, winning the first set 25-16.

Berean made a comeback of its own in the second set, tying the game at 24 after being down 24-18. Marion pulled out a 30-28 victory, on plays from Katey Ehrlich and Kaelyn Thierolf.

“They’re not satisfied with how the way they played, but I’m glad they won,” Thierolf said.
