Warriors top Solomon in Centre tournament

Staff writer

The Marion boys’ basketball team was the lower seed Tuesday night in the first round of the Centre Cougar Classic, but won in top-seed fashion.

The Warriors started fast in a matchup with Solomon High School and never looked back, winning 60-40.

Brett Voth led all scorers with six points in the first quarter, but five other Warriors scored, taking an 18-9 lead at the end of the period.

Marion continued to control the game in the second quarter, outscoring Solomon 15-9 to lead 33-18 at halftime.

The Gorillas played closer to the Warriors in the second half, but could not make up the deficit, losing 60-40.

Timothy Knolla led the Warriors with 15 points. He made three 3-pointers, which were the only threes the team made. Zach Robson and Grif Case also finished in double-digits, with 11 and 10, respectively.

The Warriors, seeded fifth in the tournament, will play the winner of the matchup between top-seeded Rural Vista and Elyria Christian Friday.

Scoring

Timothy Knolla, 15; Taylor Heidebrecht, 9; Zach Robson, 11; Grif Case, 10; James Jones, 4; Jacob Baldwin, 5; Voth, 6.
