Waste, weed unit is short-staffed

Staff writer

Marion County’s noxious weed, household hazardous waste, and transfer station department is operating short-staffed and dealing with equipment problems, director Josh Housman told county commissioners Monday.

“We’re down two people,” he said. One employee quit, and another was injured.

The department is relying on overtime.

He also reported equipment issues, including one truck being out of service and the need to borrow equipment. He said he planned to replace tires before putting another truck into regular use.

Chemical costs have increased since the start of the year, limiting how much the department can purchase, he said.

On a positive note, Housman said a new aerosol can disposal system was improving safety by reducing exposure to fumes.
