Wessel breaks 1992 record

Marion’s Luke Wessel broke the school’s 32-year-old record for the 800 Friday with a time of 1:58:85, more than a second better than the school record of 2:00:05 set in 1992.

Wessel won the 800 and the 1600 on Friday at the Heart of America league meet. Kellen Waner won in the pole vault. Dylan Kraus placed second in the 400. Hailey Harshman was third on pole vault. Kenna Wesner was third in long jump, and Vyolett Dawson was third in high jump. The Warriors will be traveling to regionals Thursday in Eureka.

Hillsboro

Hillsboro’s girls 800 relay team won Thursday in the Central Kansas League meet in Salina. Addison Jost won the 800, Riley Richert won in the 1600, and Anders Weisbeck in discus and placed seventh in shot put. Emily Gilkey was second in girls high jump and fourth in the 200. Quinlyn Funk won second in the 3200. The Trojans will hit the road Thursday for regionals in Eureka.

Goessel

Eli Gaeddert claimed first place in two events and set Wheat State League records in both.

His 4:48.56 time in the 1,600 meter was his best time of the season. Although his 3,200 time was not his personal best, 10:22.95 was good enough to set the league record.

Cheyenne Sawyer finished the 100 meter hurdle race in a record time of 15.99 seconds. Aimee Funk long-jumped 11 inches further than her personal best this season, reaching 16 feet 9 inches to claim a league record.

Funk also finished first in the 100, Sawyer converted a double win by claiming first in the 300 hurdles. Goessel’s 4x800 relay team also crossed the finish line in first place.

Javin Schmidt captured first in the 800.

The Goessel girls finished second in the nine-team league meet, and the boys finished third as a team.

Goessel will travel to Waverly for the regional track meet Friday.

Centre

Centre’s girls placed sixth and Centre’s boys were ninth at the Wheat State League meet Thursday.

Kaitlynn Bina won in the 3,200. Teammate Allie Stuchlik was right behind in second.

Bina set a new meet record for the 3,200. She bettered the old record, set in 2012, by 13 seconds.

Jenaya Plett was third in the 400 with teammate Jimena Sanchez in fourth.

On the boys side, Gentri Holub placed sixth in javelin.

Centre track will compete at Regionals on Friday in Iola, hosted by Waverly High School.

Peabody-Burns

The Warriors competed in the Wheat State League meet but didn’t have enough members to receive a team score.

Sarah Winfrey was seventh on the 800. Adyson Winter was 12th in long jump. Turner Max was 13th in discus. Peabody-Burns will go to regionals Friday at Waverly.
